Mexican driver Patricio O'Ward will start from pole position for the ninth race of the 2022 IndyCar calendar that will take place at the Mid-Ohio circuit. The Arrow McLaren SP team member managed a lap of 1m06.7054s to become the ninth poleman of the year.
The first group round saw championship contenders eliminated. Pointer Marcus Ericsson was left out of Group B as was Josef Newgarden's Penske. The American's teammate, Will Power, also failed to advance to the fastest 12 round after being knocked out of the top six in Group A.
The Colombian Tatiana Calderón suffered an off track in her last attempt placing 13th of her peloton At the start of the second round it was the rookie David Malukas who was positioned first with a record of 1m07.1309s followed by the Penske Scott McLaughlin, the rookie Callum Ilott, Patricio O'Ward and Colton Herta. Alex Palou was sitting seventh at the halfway point to decide the fastest six.
When the checkered flag waved at the finish it was McLaughlin's name that appeared in first position with a final lap of 1m06.5341s. Behind Roger Penske's competitor the two cars from Woking lined up with Felix Rosenqvist and Patricio O'Ward Scott Dixon, Colton Herta and Simon Pagenaud closing the Fast Six pack.
Patricio O'Ward set the pace from the opening lap of the fastest six with a lap of 1m06.7054s to leave McLaughlin's Penske second by 0.1328s.
Colton Herta was close to snatching the position from the SuperCars graduate but in the end he will start third, 0.3208s behind the Mexican.
